"Tough" Guy Lanes - Great!

Recognize this guy? The Idaho State Journal, Pocatello's daily news came to Tough Guy Lanes during the doubles tournament on December 7th and interviewed Don - a great choice.

The tournaments just keep getting better - for the third time this season, the attendance record was broken with 98 entries at Tough Guy Lanes in Pocatello, Idaho. And just when we thought the scoring in Roy, Utah, was out of this world - well, read on.

Ed Hodges, trekked all the way from Missoula, Montana, to bowl in Pocatello, and started the tournament by blasting through the pins to score a perfect 300 game - busting the STORM 300 game pot wide open. He went on to post games of 268 and 246 for a 814 three-game series - the first ever in SISBA tournaments. He finished high qualifier with a 1228, five-game score.

With $500 added money to the prize fund by Southeast Furniture  and SLT Graphics in Pocatello, the competition was fierce with some mighty high games bowled. Terry Hughes of Jerome, Idaho, earned the ABC 11 Strikes-In-A-Row award with a 290 game; Gene Giesbrecht, of Pocatello, Idaho had a 276; Willie Hainsworth, Idaho Falls, Idaho, not to be outdone by the guys, shot a super 278 game; Mike Jones of Pocatello, rolled out a 277; Hal Illum of Belgrade, Montana, had a 277; and Tom Wothe of Stevensville, Montana, started the whole thing off the first game of the first squad with a 274.

There were seven 700 series posted in Utah, but the December tournament bested that number by one - including Chuck Reinbold (Jackson, Wyoming) with a 751. Joining him were: Jeff Foster of Taylorsville, Utah and Willie Hainsworth with 718; Ron Hendricks of Fort Hall, Idaho and Lynn Larsen of Blackfoot, Idaho both had 717; Les Comer of Bozeman, Montana, had 716; Ed Strommen of Anaconda, Montana had 706; while Vardell Tait of McCammon, Idaho shot 705.

And for those out there who think they can't compete with those youngsters (those under 50 years old), Ron Hendricks, Lynn Larsen, Les Comer, and Ed Strommen are all classified as Super Seniors (those over 60 years of age).

The scores were great: Where there were ten bowlers over 1100 and 33 over 1000 in the November tournament, there were 20 over 1100 with 59 over 1000. See December 2002 tournament results.

Of course, the big story was Ed Hodges winning the STORM 300 game pot a total of $1388. The pot will start with $100 next month - still a prize to shoot for.

In the raffle conducted by SISBA, Allen Nelson of Boise, Idaho, won the Storm four-ball bag; Fran Luras of Pocatello, Idaho, won the Storm Trauma Shock bowling ball; the Storm Football bowling ball went to Pat Comas of Bozeman, Montana; and George Lahmann, who came all the way from Missoula, Montana, won the booby prize of a Storm keychain.

The next tournament will be at Snake River Bowl in Burley, Idaho. There is $500 added money to the prize fund by Down Howell of Don Howell Repair and Towing and by Snake River Bowl. This is one of the newest bowling centers in Idaho, has 28 lanes,  and promises one of the greatest shots ever.

We added four new members to the list this past tournament including: Doral Elder, and Ray Poulter, of Logan, Utah; Eddie Shelton of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Boyd Eckert of Blackfoot, Idaho.

We would like to thank Rita and her gals in the cafe for the wonderful breakfast as well as the staff and management of Tough Guy Lanes for hosting a great tournament!
