Great Scores at the Christmas Tournament

Boy, did Idaho Falls get plastered with snow the day of the tournament. Apparently, Idaho Falls was the only city who got the big snow because those traveling from other areas reported that they didn't run into any snow until about 10 miles out of town - in any direction. The only participants the storm seemed to deter were those from Idaho Falls.

With 53 entries, the cut was at 13: A high qualifier from each squad and a Super Senior all drew a bye in the first round. It took a 979, five-game series to qualify. Den Fernandez of Taylorsville, Utah, was the only participant to score over 1100 - he had an 1108. There were seven series of 1000 or better.

There was some good scores coming out of the two-game rolloff, especially by Craig Goodwin of Idaho Falls, Idaho, who put games of 246 and 278 together for a 524 to win his match. And he didn't look back from there: Goodwin rolled a 235 in the one game match against Bob Bywater of Rupert, Idaho, to take over the top seed position for the stepladder playoff. Max Shellabarger of Roy, Utah, rolled through the stepladder finals, beating out Ed Hodges of Missoula, Montana, and Den Fernandez to meet with Goodwin. But Goodwin had his mind made up to win and did so convincingly with a 255 game to Shellabargers's 165. See tournament results.

The winner of the High Rollers entry was Den Fernandez and the STORM bowling ball winners were Bob Bywater of Rupert, Idaho and Brad Owens of Idaho Falls, Idaho.

We would like to thank our tournament sponsors, Leo's Place (member Leo O'Ryan) and Vic's Truck and Auto Repair (director Vic Verhoff) for their continued sponsorship of our Idaho Falls tournament.

Don't Forget: The Bob Ross Memorial Tournament is being sponsored by Ramada Inn and Convention Center at 133 West Burnside, just west of the I-86 Chubbuck exit.  Please make your reservations at 208-237-0020. Please be sure to mention you are with the Seniors Bowling Tournament

The next tournament will be the Bob Ross Memorial Tournament on February 12 at the Pine Bowling Center - always a fun tournament. It is sponsored by The Bowlers Den Pro Shop and Ramada Inn and Convention Center

The March tournament will be held at Desert Paradise Lanes in Elko, Nevada, again this year and the Stockman's Hotel and Casino has offered two free nights stay for our event. A drawing will be held at the February tournament in Pocatello to determine who will win. If you want to be included in the drawing, you either must be present at the tournament at Pine Bowl, or you should let Dean Livingstone or Pat Verhoff know by email or phone to put your name in the hat.

And some wonderful news and some sad news: Ben Fulton of Ogden, Utah, will be inducted into the Ogden Bowling Association Hall of Fame next month (February), and Ben informed us that former member Horst Melle passed away last month. He was a member of SISBA from 1994 through 1999. He was 57 years old.

Welcome to new member Frank Barrera of Hyrum, Utah. Hope to see him at future tournaments.

Thank you to Randy Landon and his staff for helping make the tournament run smoothly, LaRena Deason for fixing great meals from the cafe', and to Wendy Torres for keeping the participants as well as the audience from become dehydrated.
