Record
Numbers Turn Out In Elko
In
contrast to the 48 entries seen in Nampa, Idaho, in the first March 2003
tournament, Desert Paradise Lanes in Elko, Nevada, drew 117 entries over
four squads.
Because Desert
Paradise Lanes has 16 lanes and a big turnout was expected, we decided to try
three squads on Saturday and one Sunday morning to accommodate all those who
wished to participate.
Because of the
great sponsorship given by the local businesses in Elko, we also decided to pay
the high score in each squad which did not make the playoffs. Both concepts were
experimental, but successful and may be tried again in future tournaments.
The scores were
rather low as Rich and J.D. Merrill of Desert Paradise Lanes lay down an ABC
sport condition. There were 11 five-game series of over 1000, and in the cut to
28 went down to 927. See Elko tournament results.
Deciding to take
time off for one squad, SISBA members Larry Wasson and Sylvia Jensen,
Idaho Falls, Idaho, found a great little wedding chapel and tied the knot.
Congratulations!! And thank you to Jo Copeland who made the arrangements
for a wedding cake at the bowling center.
We
would like to thank the generosity of the sponsors who gave to the
prize fund: United Coin, Swire Coca Cola of Nevada, Rocky
Mountain Air, Elko Marine, and Desert Paradise Lanes.
And
especially the Stockman's
Hotel and Casino who added $500 to the first place payoff. Leroy Bitton
of the Stockman's came over to the Desert Paradise Lanes to
present the first place winner Don Winter of Kearns, Utah, with
the $500 prize.
