Another Great
Turnout in Elko
Unlike
last month, the weather was cooperative and the turnout was great to bowl at
Desert Paradise Lanes in Elko, Nevada.
As he did last year, J.D. Merrill
put out a modified sports shot to challenge the bowlers - and challenge them it
did as there were 11 series over 1000 out of the 92 entries. The low score to
qualify was 954. Nobody dipped into the Storm 300 Game Pot.
Thanks to the sponsors of the tournament: Desert
Paradise Lanes, Stockman's Hotel and Casino, Elko Sanitation, Swire Coca-Cola,
Nevada State Bank, and Great Basin Beverage, we were able to pay out prize
money of over $5000 with first place receiving $1000.
And that honor went to Super
Senior Howard Christensen, of Kaysville, Utah. Howard, who qualified in
the ninth regular qualifying spot with a 972 five-game total, went on to defeat Don
Robinson of Boise, Idaho, 196 to 149, Charlie Hardin of Meridian,
Idaho with a whopping 241 game to 166, and Den Fernandez of Taylorsville,
Utah, 189 to 163. Going into the step-ladder finals, Howard was top seed and in
what has to be the lowest scoring final match ever, dispatched John Bertolina
of Henderson, Nevada, with a whopping score of 151 game to John's 136. See
Elko Tournament Results. On top of all that excitement, Howard was staying
at the Stockman's Hotel and Casino and thus qualifies for the extra $500 the
Stockman's offers to the first place winner.
In the STORM, Inc. bowling ball raffle, Darrell
Callison of Blackfoot, Idaho, won the Storm Triple X ball (again) and John
Bertolina won the Football bowling ball which he generously donated back to
the junior program at Desert Paradise Lanes.
Our last regular season tournament will be
at Bowl-ero Lanes in Idaho Falls, Idaho, with added money by Vic's
Truck and Auto Repair (Vic Verhoff) and STORM, Inc. (bowling ball
raffle). The GRAND FINALS will follow at Snake River Bowl in
Burley, Idaho on April 25th.
There are only two squads left for
qualifying for the Grand Finals:
Those needing one squad to qualify: Gene
Baxter, Don Bruch, Gary Burton, Mike Galloway, Willie Hainsworth, Glenn Hauptman,
Fred Holbeck, Marty Holland, Con Honstein, Tom Karr, Mike McCarthy, Don McKay,

Rich Smith, and Lee Youngman
Those needing two squads to qualify: James
Bischoff, Jeff Foster, Dan Kaurin, George Lahmann, Jerry Meyers, Jesse Montross,
Bob Orham, Pep Plummer, Jerry Reeve, Lynn Shuland, Jim Spoklie, John Trask, Skip

A special thank you to J.D.
Merrill and Jo Copeland along with the marvelous staff of Desert Paradise
Lanes who kept the tournament running smoothly.
