For the first time, SISBA had two tournaments in a row with over 75 entries! In fact, the November tournament, held at Snake River Bowl in Burley, Idaho, matched the high entry count of Missoula, Montana with 77 entries. Don Howell, of Burley was great at getting added money for the tournament, getting sponsorship from George K's East, Super 8 Motel of Burley, and donating $250 from his own business. George K's also chipped in a discount ticket for meals at the restaurant for SISBA bowlers. That added money, along with money from the STORM bowling ball raffle, we were able to make a generous payout possible. Even though only 14 were able to qualify, we paid the next four places out of the money and two places in high game and high series for the Super Seniors. A Super Senior, Bill Palmer of Jerome, Idaho, proved that age is relative as he took to top spot in the tournament. Palmer qualified in the top spot with 1199 and never relinquished that spot through the entire tournament. He had 1651 after seven games, and 226 eight games to be top seed in the step-ladder roll-offs. However, he had a bit of a scare in the one-game roll-off against Steve Bordley, of Roy, Utah, when they tied and required a 9th and 10th frame roll-off. It was a cliff-hanger, but Palmer held on with a 49 score against Bordley's 39 score. The final game was exciting, too, as Palmer won over Don Winter, of Kearns, Utah with a score of 206 to Winter's 199. The highlight of the day was Bordley's attempt to break the STORM 300 Game Pot, which holds $905 to date. Bordley went just a bit high in the 12th frame to settle for the ABC 298 ring. He finished up with a great 713 series for the first three games, too. The STORM 300 Game Pot is estimated for $980 for the December tournament - we haven't had a qualifying 300 game for over two years. Roy Holloway rolled out a 300 game in April 2001, but did not participate in the 300 Game Pot. Also getting awards from ABC were Max Shellabarger, Roy, Utah, who started out with a spare then went on to put 11 strikes-in-a-row together for a 290 game for the ABC 11 Strikes-In-A-Row award. Posting 700 series for their first three games were Bill Palmer, 758; Mike McCarthy, Boise, Idaho, 701; Harley Rish, Idaho Falls, Idaho, 701; and Allen Nelson, Boise, Idaho, 741. Don Winter rolled out a 289 game, but Bordley will get the $50 from the 300 Game Pot. Two STORM bowling balls and a bag were raffled to help with the prize fund: Phyllis Hendricks (not Ron, but knows him), of Fort Hall, Idaho chose the STORM Basketball, and Jim Spoklie, of Pocatello, Idaho, took the STORM Exit. Mark Fowler of Burley, Idaho, won the bowling bag. Don't forget the Christmas Tournament in Pocatello, Idaho, in December. Breakfast will be served from 7 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Those bowling in the 9 a.m. squad will get breakfast free, it will be available to all others for $2.99. This includes eggs, bacon or sausage, hashbrowns and toast. We had several new bowlers join us this tournament including: Mike Fries and Mike McCarthy, both of Boise, Idaho; Charlie Hardin of Meridian, Idaho; Terry Hughes of Jerome, Idaho; Dwaine Mitani of Pocatello, Idaho; David Thompson of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and Ernie Wilson of Ogden, Utah. SO!! Who's Winning the Pots?
Our thanks to Wally Studer and his staff at Snake River Bowl for hosting a great tournament! Go to the November 2001 tournament results. |
