Scoring in Utah Phenomenal!
We didn't quite break the attendance record in Roy, Utah, for the November 2002 tournament, but the scoring was pretty close to recordbreaking. Larry Wasson of Idaho Falls, Idaho, led the field after the five-game qualifying with a record-chasing 1237 score in the second squad - only 40 pins short of John Bertolina's 1277 set during the 2002 Grand Finals tournament. Bertolina, of Henderson, Nevada, was top qualifier in the first squad with an 1196. With 63 entries, it took a 1084 score to make the top 14 qualifying cut. That was nabbed by newcomer Skip Wing of South Ogden, Utah. Don Howell qualified as he had the high Super Senior score out of the first squad as there were no Super Seniors to make the 1084 cutoff from the first squad. Max Shellabarger of Roy, Utah, tried to empty the STORM 300 Game Pot which stood at $1375 by rolling out 11 strikes-in-a-row. However, the 12th strike was not to be had and he ended up with a great 299 game for $50 of the pot money. Dave John, of Pocatello, Idaho, did go for the perfect game and achieved it while bowling in the two-game roll-off. However, because the STORM 300 Game Pot is to paid out only during the five-game qualifying rounds, he was not eligible to collect the prize. Seven 700 series were posted during this tournament - the high was almost an 800 as Orville Edwards of Pocatello, Idaho, rolled out a great 793 series. He was followed by Larry Wasson with a 754; Max Shellabarger with 724; John Bertolina with 717; Leon Uzelac of Woods Cross, Utah, 713; Jerry Hagle, Layton, Utah, with 710; and Ric Flores, recently returned to SISBA, with 700. There was $1000 added money to the prize fund, and for that we thank Spare Time Family Bowling Center and Monty Vonwaller who rustled up $400 of it from Coca Cola, and added the remaining $600 from the bowling center. It truly made the payout much nicer as we were able to pay the 14 qualifiers, as well as four out of the money and two places for the super seniors in both game and series. As we said, the scoring was great - there were ten bowlers with over 1100 pins, and over half the field - 33 entries - were over 1000. See November 2002 for the complete tournament results. The next tournament will be at Tough Guy Lanes in Pocatello, Idaho. There is $500 added money to the prize fund by Southeast Furniture and SLT Graphics. SLT Graphics does the GEEZER shirts so many of our members wear. If you wish to purchase one, pick out a Geezer name that fits your style, the color you like, the size you need, and then talk to Dean Livingstone, or email him at deano178@CABLEONE.NET. He will be happy to order a shirt for you.
We added several new members to the list this past tournament including: Mike Cuzzo of Nampa, Idaho, Jerry Hagle of Layton, Utah, Jim Johnson and Lyle King, of Ogden, Utah, Daron Tuttle of Harrisville, Utah, and Skip Wing of South Ogden, Utah. The staff and management of Spare Time Family Bowling Center were wonderful with their hospitality - THANK YOU! SO!! Who's Winning the Pots?
