What is it about Utah?

The weather was not great so golfing was not a good idea, but there wasn't any snow. The scoring conditions were great and Roy, Utah is closer than Missoula, but we got just about half the entries. Even with $500 added money, nobody seemed interested.

Hometown bowler Steve Bordley led the pack from the beginning, rolling out scores of 256, 205, 239, 236 and 278, he was first squad top qualifier for the first squad. And he never looked back. beating back a run for overall pins by John Bertolina of Henderson, Nevada, Steve rolled a 476 in the two-game rolloff, John had 493. Steve kept top seed by two pins going into the one-game rolloff. There, he posted a 279 game to take a commanding lead for first seed in the stepladder playoffs.

Meanwhile, Bob Garrison of Meridian, Idaho (seeded 12th in the qualifying) was quietly making his way to the top by beating out Ben Fulton of Ogden, Utah in the two-game rolloff, then new member Den Fernandez of Taylorsville, Utah, racking up enough pins along the way to be seeded third in the step-ladder playoffs.

The stepladders were exciting as Bob rolled a 249 game. Max Shellabarger of Roy, Utah, was right behind, needing at least two strikes in the tenth frame to win the match. He got the first strike, but was cheated out of the second strike by a 4-9 split - finishing with a 244 game. He next dispatched John Bertolina of Henderson, Nevada with a 220 game to John's 206. But there was no stopping Steve who won the championship match 227 to 201.

Charter member Wynn Mortensen of Corinne, Utah,  was on fire the first squad as he posted games 257 and 246 as part of a 706 three-game series and went on to have a five-game series of 1141. Also having 700 series were Steve Bordley with 700, Den Fernandez with 724. Bob Bywater of Rupert, Idaho had 716, Ben Fulton with 714, and John Bertolina with 704.  See the entire results at November 2003.

In the STORM Bowling Ball raffle, the Fear Factor was won by Steve Rasmussen of Elko, Nevada, and John Bertolina won the STORM Football. Don Howell of Burley, Idaho won the booby-prize.
