All We Can Say Is "WOW!!!"

Missoula always has a great turnout, but who would have thought that those who made the trek to Westside Lanes would have a treat in a month known for tricks and treats.

Don Winter of Kearns, Utah, set the tone for the tournament by throwing  a perfect game in the first game of the first squad. He was followed up by John Brodersen of Helena, Montana, who posted the second 300 game of the day.  Not to be outdone, Max Shellabarger of Roy, Utah, put together games of 245 followed by back-to-back 280 games for a whopping 805 series. He added games of 258 and 220 to finish with a super 1283 qualifying.

Brodersen's first squad 300 game was squeaky close to an 800 series as his 261 first game and 238 third game made a total of 799. But it was his second squad entry which made him top qualifier for the tournament as he posted a 278 game to start, a 277 to finish with a 266 and 268 in between to end up with a 1323 five-game series - a new SISBA record.

The second squad was almost a mirror of the first with Mark Bennett of Missoula, Montana, rolling out another 300 game in the first game of the second squad. With $292 in the STORM 300 Game Pot, the directors threw in another $8 and split it three ways for each 300 game winner to get $100 each.

There were quite a few great games and series: Randy Scharf, newly moved to Gillette, Wyoming, rolled out a 278 game and 744 series; Greg Waldon of Manhattan, Montana, had a two-game rolloff set of 257-246 for a 503; Glenn Hauptman, who came all the way from Cheektowaga, New York, had a 279 game for a 724 series, and had the highest two-game rolloff series of 511 which included a 279 game; John Bertolina of Henderson, Nevada, was steady as his first two games were 256 and 257, while his last two games was 247 and 247. He bowled twice and had 718 and 746 for series; Allen Nelson of Boise, Idaho, joined the fun with a 257 game and 706 series; Dave John of Pocatello, Idaho, shot a 260 for a 734; Fred Holbeck of Missoula, Montana, posted 259 for a 702; and Rich Crawford of Great Falls, Montana, rolled out a 263 game for a 702 series.

Even the Super Seniors had a good time as Ron Hendricks of Fort Hall, Idaho shot a 268 game for a 749 series; Dan Rorris of Burley, Idaho had a 278 game; Lowell Thomas of Old Town, Idaho was first out of the qualifying with a 1120; and Jack Owsley of Boise, Idaho rolled a 278 game!

There were eight series over 1200, 16 series over 1100, and 27 series were over 1000. Some pretty good scoring which will help to bring averages up in the statistics. For more information, please see the October 2003 Tournament Results.

In the STORM Bowling Ball raffle, the balls were won by Jean Hardman of Ogden, Utah, Kerry Johnson of Pocatello, Idaho and Kevin Shuland of Missoula, Montana. The bag was won by Terry O'Neal, also of Missoula Montana. Thanks for your support, the money goes to pay the Super Seniors high games and series out of qualifying.

Our next tournament will be November 9th in Roy, Utah. We had a great time there last year and look forward to going there again. There is $500 added to the prize fund by Spare Time Family Fun Center so sign up now at the Entry Form.

We would like to welcome new members Glenn Hauptman of Cheektowaga, New York (if we gave away a "who came the farthest" award - he would win hands down); also Fred Holbeck, and Bruce Randall of Missoula, Montana; John Brodersen of Helena, Montana; and Greg Waldon of Manhattan, Montana. We hope to see all of you at more tournaments!

A special thanks to our tournament sponsors Western Title and Escrow (Chris Leary participated in the tournament); Overhead Door of Missoula (Ken Peers participated); James Ouellette, DDS (Jim bowled with us); Century Games and Amusement, Inc.; South Gate Inn; Paradise Casino; and Westside Lanes. Also thanks to Tom Henry who gets out and finds these sponsors for us.

We would especially like to thank the staff and management of Westside Lanes and Fun Center. They were always right there when we needed them. The cafe staff was great as was the staff in the lounge. We always have a super time and look forward to coming back again.
