Nice weather impedes entries in Missoula

Entries were down for the Missoula, Montana tournament - but with the temperatures in the 70s, golf, hunting and any other outdoor activity was the probably cause.

Still, the bowling inside was pretty good. With $1550 added money and 68 entries, 18 bowlers were moved into the playoffs. Allen Nelson of Boise, Idaho, was the high qualifier on the 2nd squad and for the tournament overall with an 1106. The other bowler to break the 1100 mark was Ed Strommen of Anaconda, Montana. The Super Senior Stromment qualified high in the first squad with an 1100 even.  A 995 series qualified low - the first time a qualifier has been under 1000 for a long time.

The two-game competition was tough with 14 of the 18 participants scoring over 400 with Ed Strommen coming out on top going into the one-game competition. Strommen remained top seed for the stepladder playoffs. However, Don Winter of Kearns, Utah, was determined to repeat his championship in Missoula and drove through the competition from fourth seed defeating Ed Hodges and Don Bruch, both of Missoula, Montana. In a very close match, Winter defeated Strommen 181 to 176.  See tournament results.

Our next tournament at Bowl-ero Lanes in Idaho Falls, Idaho will be an experimental tournament. As approved at the Annual Meeting in April 2004, we will conduct the tournament in divisions and open the tournament for 44 years of age and under one time. The format and results will be discussed at the December tournament to see if we would like to try it again.

Those 44 and under will not pay the membership fees, however, the entry, side pots and brackets will remain the same price for all. Those 45 and over and not already a member will pay the membership fee. Divisions will be A: 44 years and under; B: 45-51; C: 52-60; and D: 61 and over. Women participants will bowl in the D division unless they choose to do otherwise. There will be NO playoffs between divisions, all scores stay in the division in which the bowler participates. All first place winners will receive $500 and the four division winners will compete against each other for an additional $500 prize.

Brackets and side pots will also be in divisions, however, B division will be able to participate in A division side pots and brackets, B and C division will be able to participate in A and B division side pots and brackets, and C and D division will be able to participate in A and B and C division side pots and brackets.
