13th SISBA Season About to get Underway

The Seniors Intermountain Scratch Association will be welcoming members back for the thirteenth season. We are looking forward to seeing all the familiar faces and, hopefully, many new faces.

SISBA has come a long way  since its inception in 1990 when 14 bowlers over the age of 50 got together to form the association. The charter members included Frank Clark and Bill Brown of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Gary Burton, Wayne Siscoe and Bob Ross of Pocatello, Idaho, Howard Christensen of Kaysville, Utah, Darold Fielding and Glen Vaughan of Ogden, Utah, Jerry Goodwin and Lynn Larsen of Blackfoot, Idaho, Gene Lord of Plain City, Utah, Wynn Mortensen of Corinne, Utah, Dan Rorris of Burley, Idaho, and Cecil Ames of Salt Lake City, Utah. Wayne and Cecil have passed away, and Frank, Bill, Darold, and Gene no longer participate. Glen and Jerry still check in from time to time, while Gary, Bob, Howard, Wynn and Dan are still active.

In 1991, the membership was doubled as Max Adams and Darrell Callison of Blackfoot, Idaho, Dee Atwood, Bob Horton and Dean Lewis of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Bill Funk, Dave John, Kerry Johnson and Dean Livingstone of Pocatello, Idaho, Ron Hendricks of Fort Hall, Idaho, Roy Land of Burley, Idaho, Richard McNabb of Layton, Utah, and Ray Noles of Rigby, Idaho joined the ranks.

Growth was continuous as 10 joined in 1992, but only three in 1993. Thirty-nine members signed up in 1994, the year Dean Livingstone, and Vic and Pat Verhoff took the reins from Wayne Siscoe. In 1995, the tournament went to the Magic Valley of Idaho (Rupert, Burley, Twin Falls area) and membership grew with 32 new members. Eighteen joined in 1996, and another jump occurred in 1997 when 39 joined, The journey to Missoula, Montana in 1998 saw a whopping 49 new members participate.

There were 11 new members in 1999, and growth has been steady ever since with 26 in 2000, and 26 in 2001. Adding an Elko, Nevada, tournament in 2002 stimulated a new surge in members with 32 joining that year. Of the recorded membership of over 300 members, half (156) members are still participating and of those, six are charter members.

For more information about the members, current and past, go to Member List.

Our first tournament is scheduled at Nampa Bowling Center in Nampa, Idaho. The schedule for the upcoming 2003-2004 season is available at Schedule, and while the dates are hopefully set in concrete, the added money and sponsors may change as the season progresses.

The STORM 300 Game Pot was hit pretty hard this past season as there were two 300 games and several 279 and over games rolled. This season's pot will start at $240 - still a bonus.

It was requested that the winners of the high game side pots be posted on a board rather than announced during the bowling. We agree, as it is difficult to announced the scores without having someone in their approach. This season, the winners will be displayed on a board in a prominent place.

Concerning the Missoula Tournament in October!

Tom Henry, our super-dooper coordinator in Missoula informs us that the University of Montana - Missoula will be having their homecoming game in Missoula the same weekend as our tournament. We have blocked 20 rooms at the Southgate Inn - a tournament sponsor - until October 1, 2003. They have been sponsoring the tournament for the past three years with $250 added to the prize fund.

They are located at 3530 Brooks (just off Highway 95 South). Their toll-free number outside of Montana is 800-247-2616 and in Montana 800-533-2250. If you are planning on participating in the Missoula tournament (and we hope you all are), be sure to get your rooms reserved early!!
