2004-2005 Season Starts Out Slow in Nampa

Starting out the new 2004-2005 season with the added squad on Saturday night did not seem to increase participation overall. There were 13 entries on Saturday night, but only eight on the Sunday 9 a.m. squad - not enough to have a high qualifier with a bye into the playoffs or to advance a Super Senior. But, there were 59 entries overall, not too bad for the season opener.

PLEASE NOTE: In the schedules mailed to the 2003-2004 SISBA members, it listed the tournament at Snake River Bowl as April 9-10, 2005. That is incorrect: it should be April 2-3, 2005. Please make this change on your schedule!

With $750 added money to the prize fund by Pepsi Cola and Benjamin Rural Disposal, we were able to pay two more places out of the qualifying round as well as Super Seniors out of the money prizes. And the competition for that prize money was fierce. The scores were fair with Max Shellabarger of Roy, Utah, leading the field with an 1158. All 13 qualifiers were over 1000 with Allen Nelson of Boise, Idaho in a tie for the last position with John Sagez of Garland, Utah, with a 1020. Nelson broke the tie in a one-game rolloff with a 237 game over 135.

To even out the rolloffs in the absence of a second squad high qualifier, Howard Christensen of Kaysville, Utah, was given the first round bye as high Super Senior qualifier. He had posted a 1014 series. Dan Rorris was moved into the rolloff as high Super Senior in the third squad with a 1005, narrowly beating out Orville Edwards who had 1004.

Bob Garrison of Boise, Idaho, who had qualified as number one in the Saturday 4 p.m. squad and therefore drew a bye the first round, eliminated George Denton of Nampa, Idaho in the one-game playoff to finish second seed for the step ladder rolloff. There he defeated first seed Shellabarger with a 216 to 198 to take his first SISBA championship ever. See tournament results

There were no high scores to tap the STORM 300 Game Pot, so the pot will enter the October tournament in Missoula, Montana at $310.

Speaking of Montana, the tournament will fall on October 9 and 10, 2004 - the same weekend as Montana State University's homecoming. It would be a good idea for everyone planning on going to Missoula for the SISBA tournament to get their room reservations as soon as possible.

The Southgate Inn (3530 Brooks Street) is again sponsoring the SISBA Tournament in Missoula. A block of rooms has been set aside for the SISBA members. Room rates are $59 for all rooms, single queen, double queen or single king. This includes a deluxe hot continental breakfast with a delightful assortment of food from which to choose. Directions to the Southgate Inn are: from Interstate 90 - Reserve Street exit, go south. Turn left on Brooks Street, two blocks on right.
