Sunny Weather Welcomes SISBA to Boise

The turnout in Boise was down somewhat, but by looking at the weather through the doors of Westy's Garden Lanes, it was clear to see there was an excuse.

The bowling inside was challenging too, but a Cinderella story was about to take place.

The SISBA tried a new time schedule, 7 p.m. Saturday, and 9 a.m. Sunday, in an attempt to get through the tournament playoffs earlier and therefore get on the road to be home for those who were traveling long distances. So far, other than the Elko tournament in March, this will be the only tournament to offer these squads. The rest will be at the regular times of 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

Anyway, back to the Cinderella story, in the Saturday night squad there were 14 entries. This required a top qualifier and a Super Senior to be placed in the two-game roll-off on Sunday. George Denton of Nampa, Idaho, was top qualifier with a 1005 score and Chris Leary of Missoula, Montana, was the Super Senior with an 877.

On Sunday, Randy Millspaugh of Kuna, Idaho, burned up the lanes to become top qualifier in the Sunday squad with a 1088 score. The high Super Senior from the Sunday squad was Mike McCarthy, of Boise, Idaho, with a 1041. With the top qualifiers drawing byes, Larry Buffington of Boise, Idaho was the top seed and matched up against Leary.

To make a long story short, Leary walked in Sunday morning to find out he was going to be bowling in the play-offs and from there, never looked back. Coming in at 877 - a full 100+ pins below the next higher qualifier, Leary knocked off Buffington with a two-game score of 435 to 426, rolled over top qualifier Millspaugh with a 245 game and advanced to the stepladder finals. There, he met and beat Larry Wasson of Idaho Falls, Idaho, with a 203 game and jumped his final hurdle to defeat Richard Loya of Boise, Idaho, with a 192 game to Loya's 180.

With that win, Leary also wins the entry to the High Rollers tournament, which he accepted, and on top of all that, had his name drawn in the STORM Bowling Ball raffle. A rather good day for Leary all around.

The next SISBA tournament will be in Missoula, Montana on October 7-8, 2006, at Westside Lanes. They have done some remodeling to their facilities so we all need to go take a look. There is $1000+ added money to the prize fund from James Ouelette, DDS, Southgate Inn, Overhead Door of Missoula, BFI, Ziegler Building Supply, Summit Amusement, Paradise Falls Casino, and Westside Lanes

For the sixth year, Southgate Inn is sponsoring the tournament and offering very good rates for the SISBA bowlers. They offer a continental breakfast and workout room, hot tub, sauna, and heated pool. The are right across the street from another sponsor Paradise Falls Casino which offers a great food as well as many TVs on which to watch your favorite game, not to mention a great casino atmosphere.

Room Rates are $44.95 for a single, $47.95 for king bed, and $54.95 for two double beds.
